Common bream inhabit many lakes and medium to large rivers. They are particularly abundant in still or slow-flowing waters, backwaters, warm shallow lakes and some brackish estuaries.
They are highly social fish that often travel in large shoals. Adults commonly search for food close to the bottom.
They feed mainly on insect larvae, small crustaceans, molluscs and other benthic organisms, as well as plant material. Large individuals may occasionally take small fish.
Spawning usually occurs in backwaters, floodplains or vegetated lake margins. The eggs are adhesive and males may defend spawning areas.
