Tinca tinca
Biological group : Fish
Family : Tincidae
Class : Actinopterygii
Order : Cypriniformes
Environment : Freshwater_brackish
Tench mainly inhabit shallow lakes, ponds, backwaters and slow-flowing waters with abundant vegetation, often over soft or muddy substrates. They tolerate relatively low oxygen levels.
They commonly remain close to the bottom and vegetation. During winter their activity decreases sharply and they may remain buried or almost inactive in the mud.
They are omnivorous and feed mainly on bottom-dwelling insect larvae, molluscs, small crustaceans and other invertebrates. Young fish also consume algae and plant material.
Spawning takes place in shallow, densely vegetated water. Females deposit numerous adhesive eggs on plants, where the larvae remain attached during their earliest days.
