Largemouth bass inhabit lakes, ponds, reservoirs, swamps, backwaters and quiet river sections. They generally favour relatively clear water with abundant vegetation or structure.
They are territorial predators that frequently use vegetation, submerged wood and structural edges as ambush cover. Cannibalism may also occur.
Young fish feed mainly on crustaceans, insects and small fish. Adults feed primarily on fish and crayfish and may also capture amphibians.
The male builds a nest in shallow water and becomes strongly territorial. After spawning he guards and fans the eggs and protects the young during their earliest stages.
