Bleak mainly inhabit lakes and relatively calm sections of rivers and larger waterways. They commonly occupy open water and surface layers.
They are highly social fish and often form large shoals. They frequently swim close to the surface and feeding activity is particularly high during warmer periods.
They feed mainly on zooplankton, small crustaceans and aquatic or terrestrial insects reaching the water surface. They may also forage for small prey near the bottom.
Spawning occurs in spring and early summer in shallow areas, often over gravel, stones or vegetation.
