European eel use a very wide range of habitats including rivers, canals, lakes, lagoons, estuaries and coastal waters. They can live in both fresh and brackish water.
They are mainly active at dusk and during the night. The species is catadromous: individuals grow for several years in continental or coastal waters before migrating to the ocean to reproduce.
The diet varies with size and habitat and includes insects, crustaceans, molluscs, worms and fish. Large individuals can become strongly piscivorous.
At maturity, eels leave European waters and undertake a long oceanic migration toward the Sargasso Sea region. Adults do not return after reproduction.
