Northern pike mainly inhabit lakes, ponds, backwaters and slow-flowing river areas with vegetation or other cover that can be used for concealment. They may also occur in some brackish waters.
They are generally solitary and territorial predators, often holding close to vegetation or structure before making a rapid attack on prey.
Adults feed mainly on fish, but may also take crayfish, amphibians and other opportunistic prey. Cannibalism is common.
Spawning takes place in shallow areas, often among vegetation or seasonally flooded margins. Adults move inshore or into marshy areas and scatter their eggs over submerged vegetation.
