Crustacé décapode d’eau douce européen.
White-clawed crayfish live exclusively in freshwater and favour clean rivers, streams, canals, lakes and reservoirs, often in calcium-rich waters. They use stones, roots, banks and crevices as shelter.
They are mainly active at dusk and during the night. During daylight they usually remain hidden beneath stones, among roots or in cavities within the substrate.
They are omnivorous and consume aquatic invertebrates, small animal prey, plant material, algae, detritus and carrion.
Mating generally occurs in autumn. Females carry the eggs beneath the abdomen through winter and spring, with young usually hatching in early summer.
