Brown trout occur in streams, rivers, lakes and some ponds, generally favouring cool, well-oxygenated water with adequate cover.
They may become territorial from the juvenile stage. Depending on the population, individuals can remain river residents, live in lakes or undertake migrations to the sea.
Juveniles feed mainly on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. Adults may also consume molluscs, crustaceans and small fish.
Spawning takes place mainly in flowing streams and rivers over gravel substrate. Females bury the eggs in the gravel, where the earliest developmental stages remain protected.
