Rainbow trout inhabit clear, cool streams, rivers and lakes. Some forms may also spend part of their life cycle at sea.
Populations may be resident or migratory. Mature fish move toward spawning areas, sometimes over long distances in lake-dwelling or anadromous forms.
They feed on a wide variety of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates as well as small fish. At sea, their diet may also include fish and cephalopods.
