Wels catfish mainly inhabit large and medium-sized lowland rivers, backwaters, large lakes and reservoirs, often using deep areas or places offering substantial cover.
They are mainly nocturnal predators. They forage close to the bottom but can also hunt throughout the water column.
Young fish consume a wide variety of invertebrates and small fish. Large individuals become primarily piscivorous but may also capture other aquatic vertebrates.
The male generally prepares a spawning site or nest in shallow water associated with vegetation or roots. After spawning, the male guards the eggs until they hatch.
