Arctic char inhabit cold, clear and well-oxygenated waters. They occur mainly in lakes, cold rivers and, for some migratory populations, coastal marine waters.
Populations may be resident or migratory. Some remain in lakes or rivers throughout life while others migrate to sea and later return to freshwater to reproduce.
The diet varies greatly with habitat and includes planktonic crustaceans, amphipods, molluscs, insects and fish.
Spawning generally takes place in autumn or winter. Females prepare spawning areas in gravel or stony substrate where eggs are deposited and then covered.
